Angel Fire New Mexico

Angel Fire NM Community Profile

Angel Fire is situated at an elevation of 8,382 feet in the high sitting Moreno Valley of Colfax County New Mexico. The climate is consistent with the Rocky Mountain setting that includes some of the highest peaks in New Mexico. Around 210 inches of snow typically falls on Angel Fire in the winter season, and average temperatures typically range from between zero and 30 degrees. Summer temperatures rarely get above 80 degrees with typical regular afternoon thunderstorms that cool off midday temperatures even further.

Almost completely surrounded by U.S. National Forest and private ranches, the bounded incorporated Village of Angel Fire covers 18,450 acres. The Village includes the general aviation Colfax County Airport and the Angel Fire Ski & Golf Resort, which is a private membership community overseen by the Association of Angel Fire Property Owners (AAFPO). The Angel Fire Resort has more than a thousand private homes, a 500-acres ski and snowboard mountain, a championship golf course, a country club, a fishing lake, and other amenities available for member-landowners. Non-members can pay to use most resort facilities, but members enjoy discounts on most amenities and services.

A favorite hunting ground for the Utes, the Moreno Valley population expanded in the 1860s with the discovery of gold. Ranching primarily dominated the local area until the 1960s, when the first ski runs of Angel Fire Resort were cut in on Aqua Fria Peak. Tourism primarily fuels the local economy, although there are still several large working ranches that continue to operate in the area.
